Got a PC but wasn't lucky enough to get one that comes with a copy of Microsoft Word? Want some software that's powerful, efficient and, most importantly, free? You're in luck.

Here is a short list of free writer's software that I've come across.

Open Office is a full-featured, open-source office suite. But, of course, you're more interested in the word processor than all the other stuff that comes with it. The Open Office word processor is powerful and loaded with features, easily rivaling Microsoft Word.

RoughDraft is a freeware word processor created specifically for writers. It does away with many of the extraneous features found in full-blown office suites and focuses on providing writers with the features that truly apply to them.

RoughDraft allows you to have multiple documents opened at once, and you can easily navigate through them with tabs. It also has live spell checking and automatically saves your open documents at user-set intervals. It also has a notepad feature, which gives each open document its own separate notepad which gets saved along with the file. This is perfect for taking document-specific notes, and an instant backup feature that creates a backup copy of your work.

My only major complaint is that it doesn't have a full screen mode.

WordWeb is a free dictionary and thesaurus program. This allows you to have a complete dictionary on your hard drive, with no need to go online to look up a word. WordWeb is also a companion program to RoughDraft, endowing the already impressive word processor with dictionary functions.

Evernote is an incredibly powerful note-taking application. Indispensable for any writer. Arrange your notes into categories and subcategories quickly and easily. Get all those jumbled ideas out of your head and put them into coherent, neatly categorized notes that are a breeze to navigate through. You'll wonder how you ever did without it.
